I agree that solving algorithm challenges that won't be used in the day-to-day is pointless, but understanding time complexity and code optimization should be tested for. I believe that whiteboards are the worst interview tool, and things should be done as close to the real-world environment as possible. Testing for soft skills, self-awareness, and ability to research is also key.
