If you look at human history, you'll see that monogamy has mostly existed on the surface – meaning "for show" – for brief periods of time. We've been in one of those times but as we can see, most people don't adhere to it.

They either cheat, practice non-monogamy, or serial monogamy. Most people, not all, have to try very, very hard to maintain a strictly monogamous relationship.
